The Carlow Town office is part of a number of offices across the US and UK, which provide software support to the wider organisation. In total Unum employs 10,000 people worldwide.
ICT Ireland, the IBEC group that represents the high-tech sector, welcomed the announcement. Speaking in relation to it, ICT Ireland director Paul Sweetman said: "Today's announcement by Unum is very encouraging. Not only is Ireland viewed as a world-class location for technology companies, it is also seen as a premier location for the technology divisions of corporations from broader sectors, such as financial services.
"Against the backdrop of major measures to support the technology sector announced in the 2013 Action Plan for Jobs, continued strong growth of the Irish technology sector is expected. With over 14,400 jobs announced in the last three years, implementation of our positive policies to satisfy the skills demand should now be the focus."
